OIL

souls in turmoil

started way before standard oil

that is just one example of how they get and take

forgot the principle to give and receive

all they give is their greed

from which the fat, dumb, and happy feed

don’t worry

i know when you realize your ignorance it’s tough to handle

like damn i’m taking part in the biggest scandal

It is funny who we are taught about in school. I learned very little about corruption in politics and business and very little on an important topic: oil. We barely touched the surface in history class on what really happened during these events and did not get much perspective. Most importantly we did not learn how these events still affect us in our daily lives now.  Until recently, I did not understand what a muckraker was or hear of an example of one. A muckraker is an investigative journalist who aims to expose corruption. I recently read about Ida Tarbell, a muckraker, who exposed Standard Oil and John D. Rockefeller, the richest American to ever live. At first, the publishing of her expose on Standard Oil lead to action by ordering the illegal monopoly to be broken up into companies. This did not change much in the long run. The business remained to make a tremendous profit and John D. Rockefeller and his name lived on.. unblemished. After this, the issue with Standard Oil has been overlooked. It still operates in the same way, just not under the name of Standard Oil, rather Exxon Mobile, Chevron, and BP. The Rockefeller’s still hold great power over the economy using similar techniques as John D. Rockefeller to exploit others, gain more control, and make a larger profit. This has granted these big oil companies tremendous political power, even more so, with the recent appointing of Secretary of State to Rex Tillerson, the former CEO of ExxonMobil. This is particularly concerning with the issue of climate change, where programs in denial of the issue were funded by ExxonMobil in the past. Now, the former CEO holds  an influential position in politics, and it seems clear what his standpoint on the issue is.

“In 2016, the Rockefeller Family Fund announced that it would divest holdings from fossil fuel companies. They would do so over time except in the case of ExxonMobil which was singled out “for immediate divestment because of its morally reprehensible conduct.”

They blame the company for actively fighting to discredit scientific research into the issue of climate change. David Kaiser, a fifth-generation descendant of John D. Rockefeller, published an article outlining some findings of their investigation, showing extensive lobbying efforts by ExxonMobil against the Kyoto Protocol treaty. The findings also allege successful efforts by the company to lobby Vice President Dick Cheney and President George W. Bush to replace government-related scientists who believed in climate change with skeptics” (http://bigthink.com/paul-ratner/why-the-rockefellers-are-battling-exxonmobil-over-climate-change)

“Exxon Mobil, under fire over its past efforts to undercut climate science, is accusing the Rockefeller family of masterminding a conspiracy against it. Yes, that Rockefeller family.

The company, which has been accused of scheming to pay surrogates to deny the threat of climate change, is trying to turn the tables by calling its opponents the real conspirators. It is fighting state attorneys general, journalists and environmental groups in an all-out campaign to defend its image.

But the oil and gas giant has directed some of its fiercest fire at the descendants of John D. Rockefeller, who in 1870 founded Standard Oil, the company that became Exxon Mobil. Rockefeller family charities, longtime backers of environmental causes, have supported much of the research and reporting that has called the company to account for its climate policies, and Exxon Mobil is crying foul”(https://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/21/science/exxon-mobil-rockefellers-climate-change.html)

There seems to be no fine line to divide who did what in this issue, since the Rockefeller family has made their fortune off of the company ExxonMobil. Everything seems rather hypocritical and like the public’s view of the truth has been obscured, yet again by a big corporation.

The Facts:

$4 billionaire of taxpayers’ money is used to give tax breaks to oil companies

Oil reserves have taken billions of years to build up and are being depleted just within a hundred.

“Greenhouse gas emissions, primarily from the burning of fossil fuels, have already warmed the globe by more than 1°C since the beginning of the industrial revolution. Unless we can rein in these emissions and ambitiously transition to a just, clean, and renewable energy future – the planet will become unrecognizable as global temperatures soar by 4, 5, or 6 °C and beyond.” (http://priceofoil.org/thepriceofoil/global-warming/)

Wind power is cost-effective. Land-based utility-scale wind is one of the lowest-priced energy sources available today, costing between two and six cents per kilowatt-hour, depending on the wind resource and the particular project’s financing. Because the electricity from wind farms is sold at a fixed price over a long period of time (e.g. 20+ years) and its fuel is free, wind energy mitigates the price uncertainty that fuel costs add to traditional sources of energy.

Wind creates jobs. The U.S. wind sector employed more than 100,000 workers in 2016, and wind turbine technician is one of the fastest-growing American jobs of the decade. According to the Wind Vision Report, wind has the potential to support more than 600,000 jobs in manufacturing, installation, maintenance, and supporting services by 2050.

It’s a clean fuel source. Wind energy doesn’t pollute the air like power plants that rely on combustion of fossil fuels, such as coal or natural gas, which emit particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur dioxide—causing human health problems and economic damages. Wind turbines don’t produce atmospheric emissions that cause acid rain, smog, or greenhouse gases.” (https://energy.gov/eere/wind/advantages-and-challenges-wind-energy)

agriculture, alternative energy, clouds

Hopefully, in the future, we can work collectively to move toward using renewable sources of energy, without anyone monopolizing the energy industry.

we are cradled in illusion,
sleeping within the comfort of the known,
but enlightenment asks us to wake and push beyond,
to ascend and become immersed in the infinite,
to become one.
you will not truly escape this world and feel what it is to live,
until you free yourself of the ideas of the inconceivable
and just know.
surrender to the serenity and let the infinite engulf you.
see that there is no death to you and this idea is what holds you here in misery,
it is what causes you to suffer,
but this life is not an ultimatum for your chance at heaven,
rather a chasm in the infinite.
you are ALL.
this time here is for realization, experience, creation,
for the ONE to divide just to feel the strength of reconnection.
humanity is the broken bond of cells,
which thrive together in homeostasis.
we create this world.
your life is powerful,
your presence,
your very being.
just realizing you create it all,
consciously or unconsciously,
you do,
so take back your power and live how you envision

less problem solving, more soul searching

IMG_6376.JPG

cling onto the night

for when day comes you must see and face everything

the secrets kept

problems created

at night it is safe for them to be forgotten

our problems tucked safely in our back pockets

guide us through the day

lost without them

incapable of knowing a bright day

without  problems for shade

a world without worry

isn’t even conceivable

if we did ever know such a thing

then we might remember we don’t know anything

nothing is certain

our problems

our world

are not as big as we thought they were

believing that no matter what we try

the life we fantasize will never be tangible

creating problem after problem

attempting to fix something that doesn’t need to be fixed

trying to understand something that doesn’t need to be understood

seeking solutions

to peacefully come to a resolution

we have been trying to fix, understand, change perfection

a rhythmic flowing universe

where change is the only constant

creating problems to give reason to our existence

unaccepting to what is

craving explanation

readily we go blind

denying the truth

that we aren’t as big as we thought we are

neither are our problems

we are far beyond what the mind can conceive

look at the palm of your hand and feel there is nothing more real than you and i

far beyond a body or a mind

and far beyond the problems we constantly seek

 – g.c.

too often i find myself in places where i am not truly wanted

i remain silent

heart sinking

keeping truth bottled up

but space to hide is limited

ideas far too wide to keep inside

so i seek solitude

locking myself away

i am ironically free

there was once a time where i did not know

so i would listen

i too sat and nodded

now i get up and leave

something changed

ignorance and small talk are no longer for me

places for negative thoughts to be harbored are etched into our minds,

space for the past and all its taunting mistakes to be held

and all our hopes for the future to be kept.

where uncertainty conquers all desire,

and where presence remains absent.

here,

sanity is lost.

when a moment comes that you are full and content,

see that there is no shelter or safety in this place.

though it may feel that way,

it is only the confinements manifested by negative thoughts.

it may feel as if it is where you’re meant to be,

where you may be drawn into your vices,

safe for excuses to be born.

it is not where you are meant to be.

you’ll remember,

once you leave this harbor tethering you to pity and self doubt,

venture out into open waters,

let yourself sink deep within the depths of your soul,

find a new home within the present,

carrying with you the lightness of an open heart and an open mind within a moment.

how do you transform poison

IMG_5703.JPG

Okay. Before you read, it is going to seem a little harsh, but it was truly how I was feeling in that moment. I know there is good compassionate people in this world, it is just often masked by the large amount of hate, jealousy, and greed. Even those who possess these qualities are innately good, I believe.

I think for too long now, there has been a lack of knowledge. I also think there is a bit of a disconnect amongst humans and our true nature. We are the same at the core. Many will try to deny this, but there is evidence in those who have been brave enough to strip away their egos and bare the layers of their souls. This was written in a time of hopelessness and is far from how I feel today. Anyways, here is an old entry from my journal:

everywhere I go I see poisoned minds

there is no normalcy anymore

everything about the world and its people

it’s crazy and fucked up

it has made me physically sick

this evil

these ideas

they are the disease of the world

what can I do?

how do you transform poison? – g.c.

So, like I said, harsh. I wrote it a couple months ago. I needed to write this down, to express what I was feeling, which was deep pain and hopelessness. I felt powerless and angry. The whole thing probably sounds dramatic, but honestly, I don’t think it is. That breaks my heart to even say.

I wrote this, because I was aggravated by the separation in our world. I was lost. I could not understand hate. I was uncertain of myself and my capability to help others. I had no confidence in myself, which was clearly reflected in my confidence in the world.

In my mind, peace seems easy. It is a simple idea. If each of us worked on ourselves and put our best effort forward, everything would be easier, we would know harmony. We would be one civilization with no borders, nothing owned, only shared. Who said the world was ours any how? What gives one human being more of a right to land than another? Most people would see me as a silly naive little girl for having this idea. I know, right now, it is not that simple. This picture represents only one event that is occurring in our world, where human beings are causing harm to one another. “What can I do?”, is a question I am sure many, like myself, ask. Certain humans are made to feel powerless in these situations, yet they continue to tell us that we have a voice and that we are free. I have come to realize I am not powerless. I no longer desire to let the circumstances of the outer world limit me and keep me stagnant. Everyday, I can make the choice to be loving and kind and to grow. I do not need to take out any discontent, that I may be feeling inside, out on the rest of the world. I control my happiness. Everyone controls their own happiness, but many do not realize this. So, I can choose to spread love to those who are lacking, to those who feel out of control.

A scared little girl wrote this journal entry. She no longer lives inside of me. I am not controlled by my fears. I am not controlled by other’s opinions. I struggle, but at the end of the day, I always choose love. Even when I let fear slip into my mind, when I allow hopelessness to take over, something inside of me is stronger now, due to the knowledge I have gained. I have complete trust in myself, that I will always get back up, even when my thoughts bring me to the verge of giving up. I have come to appreciate everything that I am and everything that I have. Gratitude helped me to fall far too much in love with this world to ever give up on it.

“they’re just shy.”

the best way to make an introvert feel like they need an excuse to be

who they are

do they understand the power the quiet possesses?

i don’t think so,

otherwise they’d know peace,

and there isn’t much peace in a crowded city,

not just because of the noise,

but the people,

the people that don’t know quiet,

they don’t know themselves,

they are never alone long enough to learn something,

they don’t know the way of an introvert,

a way that lets you see the world and yourself,

for what it truly is,

it’s the biggest advantage in life,

the quiet,

it can take you farther than you imagine it could,

it is not something to be overused,

for that would be abuse of power,

to not share with the world what the quiet gives you,

the ideas,

the inner peace,

these things give your life meaning,

they give your life power,

a silent force,

only observed

the quiet – g.c.

seasons

cropped-img_5503.jpgi want to paint my life,
like the sun paints the sky every morning and every evening,
i want to become enveloped by beauty and glory,
all my own creation,
the people that come into my life and stay,
they’ll be the portraits,
the people you can look at for so long,
you come to know them without speaking.

i’ll paint my worries as the leaves,
so when autumn comes they will all fall away with ease.

ill paint myself as a tree in the winter,
free of all its worries,
yet naked and vulnerable,
completely bare,
unable to hide,
raw and real,
vulnerable to change.

when new ideas begin to bud,
spring comes,
and i will be the flower,
young and new,
reborn,
intrinsically delicate and beautiful,
able to soak in the sun and dance in the rain,
yet prepared for heavy storms.

when summer arrives,
i’ll paint myself as a California flower,
thriving under the heat,
while others cower away.

i’ll paint myself as all the seasons,
always changing,
always room for growth,
always room on the canvas to paint life in a new direction,
no need to worry,
because there is always a new beginning
